Really top class crime fiction. I have enjoyed nearly all the ECR Lorac reissues,but for me ,this has been the very best to date. The West Country settings are beautifully done ; the author showing deep knowledge of flora and fauna. The bucolic yet sinister atmosphere is maintained with skill . Above all ,the interrogations by Chief Inspector Macdonald are precise,forensic and powerful.Critics who say Macdonald is colourless etc etc surely miss the point .
