An excellent book. I really loved this book and thought it was an excellent read. The story starts in Poplar on Christmas Day in 1880. Colleen O’Reilly had just just given birth to a premature baby who had survived. Colleen knew she was dying and and takes her baby to the Sisters of Clemency Convent Orphanage. Christmas Child by Carol Rivers This is a very enjoyable Victorian saga with it spanning Ettie(Henrietta O’Reilly) being left by her dying mother at an Orphanage in Poplar in the East End of London in the care of the Nuns. When the Orphanage closes it follows her to Soho where she looks after Benjamin and Clara and learns how to run the Tobacconist shop. Then she falls down on her luck and ends up in the Workhouse and is not treated nicely and then sold into service, where once again her luck fails. Everything turns out…
