When George Gay, editor of a chain of detective magazines, is stabbed in the back, it is a case of too many suspects without a single alibi between them. Added to which is a certain lack of motive—apart from the dead man’s unpopularity at Moeran Publications.
Not only Lieutenant Symes, of Homicide, is baffled by the case. John Fleming, Gay’s assistant, is told by his boss to find the killer—and as Symes picks on him to push around, Fleming is forced to play detective in self-defence.
Robert Cornel, a writer from New York, is too conveniently on the spot to be ignored, but Fleming can’t make him talk until Letty Bird, Gay’s girlfriend, breaks down. But that is after the second murder…
Fleming who was lamed in the war, has a chip on his shoulder that prevents him reacting normally to lovely Bea Kennedy—which annoys her because she wants to marry him! Then there is Peter J. Moeran, the publishers, who puts business before his employees’ private lives; Mark Dodsworth, who hates commer¬cialism; Keith Langley, to whom science-fiction is a religion; and Bruce Wilmot, art editor, who wants Bea himself and is jealous of Fleming.
This is a mystery set in a Chicago publishing house, where the suspects are editors and the amateur detective is forced to apply his knowledge of crime-fiction to real life crime. Before the end is reached, Fleming himself is attacked—and he discovers that the vital motive is hidden in a missing story by Robert Canel. From that point, he continues his investigation until he unmasks the murderer in a dramatic showdown.
