Great exercises The first thing Writing Crime Fiction by Rosemary Rowe advises you to do is ALL of the exercises in this book â and there are plenty.The second thing it tells you to do is to work on something fresh for the purpose of these exercises â¦However, later in the book, the author does say that readers may work on something they already have in progress now that theyâve done all of the other exercises.I love these writersâ guides from Teach Yourself Books. Some real diamonds in here Although I’m new to crime writing, I have written other stuff over the years. People have recommended various books on this genre; some helpful, some not so, but I am really enjoying this one. Yes, you are supposed to do the exercises as you work though, but I just sat with a cuppa and read through the first few chapters and there are some real diamonds in here. An example is on the use of adjectives – don’t use too many, except when you want to hide something from your readers attention…

As a newbie to the crime genre, I found this text incredibly instructive and digestible. The tasks and exercises along the way reinforce what you’re learning and they all build towards not just skills, but the construction of your ultimate writing goal: a novel.
