The Galactic Human Empire was built atop four sciences: logic, physics, psychology, and sociology. Standing on those pillars, humans spent 100,000 years spreading out into the galaxy: warring, exploring, partying — the usual. Then there was the fifth science. And that killed the empire stone dead.

The Fifth Science is a collection of 12 stories, beginning at the start of the Galactic Human Empire and following right through to its final days. We’ll see some untypical things along the way, meet some untypical folk: galactic lighthouses from the distant future, alien tombs from the distant past, murderers, emperors, archaeologists and drunks; mad mathematicians attempting to wake the universe itself up.

And when humans have fallen back into savagery, when the secrets of space folding and perfect wisdom are forgotten, we’ll attend the empire’s deathbed, hold its hand as it goes. Unfortunately that may well only be the beginning.

Possibly best of Exurb1a so far The Fifth Science is an incredibly well-crafted piece of art which deserves a much higher price than what it’s currently being sold for. Personally, I feel this is more refined than previous masterpieces: Exurb1a – a true Da Vinci of our time – tackles innumerate deep, philosophical questions seamlessly melded with logic and physics in this collection, many of which are directly linked to our lives today. (Although that could be said of any of his books.) It spans an extremely long period of…

Goes down very nicely I bought this having seen many of he author’s You Tube pieces. This is the first of his books I have read and I’ve really enjoyed it. I have it on Kindle and the length of the stories is ideal if you have to wait and need something mentally stimulating to occupy your time without tiring you out: you finish the stories with a spring in your mental step. There are some intriguing ideas explored in these tales (which are all set in the same universe) and they are wittily told with an efficient…

Really enjoyed this book I really enjoyed reading this, as with the previous short stories book (although deeper and more.. ‘tied together’, let’s say) written by our one and only, exurb1a, and I recommend it to anyone who has at any point in time enjoyed at least one of his videos. The book has a little more than ‘some’ and a little less than ‘lots’ terms on physics, mathematics, etc, both existing and conceived by exurb1a. Still, as someone who isn’t that sciency, I could follow along and I loved the book…
