A fascinatingly wild ride, but not for the faint of heart. This is a fascinating book by the recognised ‘Father of History’. It is full of astounding stories from the distant past up to around 2,500 years ago. Some of it can be checked for verity, much of it can’t. He often gives several versions of the same story, as told to him by different witnesses. He also makes assumptions, some of them pretty wild, but often entertaining and thought provoking. Reading it in a few days would give you a headache as it is filled with details and data (and you will not remember most of what you read – same as with a loooong and very dry and boring history lesson) You cannot go wrong with this book.The only thing is that you cannot read too much of it in one go. You have to portion it: 20 pages now, 20 pages in the evening and so on. Reading it in a few days would give you a headache as it is filled with details and data (and you will not remember most of what you read – same as with a loooong and very dry and boring history lesson). So it is a book to be slowly “digested”/enjoyed.
A worth while purchase This takes some time to ‘get into’ the narrative but it is worth the perseverance. I only bought this as a result of watching The English Patient and I have to say it has been worth it. Whether I remember all the information remains to be seen but I shall remember aprts of it if only for my own satisfaction. After all I am not going to sit an examination!
