Short stories in one novel Annie Proulx is a magnificent writer and no criticism can take that away. This book reads very much like a series of short stories tied together with the idea of the accordion being passed from hand to hand or finding its way into other hands. Each story is wonderful in itself and as always her lyrical prose is superb and her characters as different and distinct as you would expect to find in multicultural America. A great story that spans the years and looks into some of the many cultures within the USA, all linked by one accordion. Wonderfully written. I love her descriptions of people and landscapes. A great story with a super ending. Highly recommend this book
One of the best stories I’ve ever read One of the best stories I’ve ever read. How does she do it – what a subject matter and then to transform it into this delightful tale of the history of the successive owners of some little old-fashioned accordion and even more specialist music style and to infom us with the passion of the players – magical in every respect. I could even get to like accordion music just from having read this book.
