Good guide Great book if you’ve got a few days to spend in Madeira. There is enough information to keep you occupied both in Funchal and outside the capital. The book is divided into various ‘top 10’ sections, e.g. gardens, beaches, etc. so almost everyone can find something for themselves there. It also contains a lot of practical information (travelling with family, accommodation, restaurants) and the phrase book, so I’ve found I don’t need any other guide book apart from this one during my 4 day trip…
Check out the Madeira tourism site. It’s easier and cheaper. Bought on the basis of the good reviews but I’m really surprised at how poor a guide this is. 1) the enclosed map shows barely anything and is folded so unusually you could be forgiven for wondering if you had just unfolded an origami frog; 2) for virtually any detail you are directed (in small print at the bottom of the page) to the tourism internet site, so would likely end up supplementing this pocket size book with a raft of printed internet pages stuffed in and around it.
Useful for planning This guide has the benefit of being compact – not as small as the Insight pocket guide but we preferred it. It isn’t as detailed as the Marco Polo/Baedeker guide book, but is practical and is useful for working out what you want to see. There are plenty of pictures, albeit because of the format (a little over A6 size) they are necessarily small. It has a reasonable fold out map in the back with both the island and Funchal.
