Mrs. De Morville of The Elms, Aldersford, was shot in broad daylight on an open lawn overlooked by fourteen windows, with four people in the house and a gardener on the other side of the hedge. There was no sign of the murderer. This is the puzzle that Inspector Frost must solve, with the able assistance of his godson Detective Billy Smith. The local police think the death was probably an accident – but Frost knows that the only way to get at the truth will be a careful sifting of the evidence, and close examination of Mrs. De Morville’s family, friends and acquaintances.

Originally published in 1929, this is the first in Herbert Maynard Smith’s series detailing the exploits of Inspector Frost.

Better than expected. Scarily patronising style, bad enough to be amusing. A well telegraphed result. I am surprised that I do not remember coming across this chap before, mind you the tone is so kindly it could be a chapess !
