Is this a poorly edited translation? No doubt a very comprehensive history with lots of detail. The problem is that the sentences tend to be very convoluted and are hampered by typos and at times contradictions. It is a struggle to get through the book. By way of example page 425 and Haydar Khan-working in the Baku congress in the mid 1920s, assassinated in October 1921 and then thought to have died in a Stalinist purge in 1937. All very confusing! It needs a thorough copy reading and editing.

Beautiful book about a fascinating country This is beautifully presented book, giving a detailed but engaging narrative of Iranian history going back to the rise of the Safavid dynasty in the early sixteenth century. Prof. Amanat says it his interpretation of modern Iranian history, rather than an attempt to summarize the field: I find it a very compelling interpretation.

A deep scholarly enterprise This is an absolute must for anyone seriously interested in not only modern Iran, but the whole of contemporary Middle East. It is the one book that must be on the reading list of all university courses on these matters
