A very good read Iâd been looking forward to reading this début crime novel, as Iâm a fan of detective fiction and know and love the part of London in which itâs set. What a great read! The depiction of East London is compelling and is an absolutely integral part of a carefully wrought plot. The key protagonists are well drawn, with attention and empathy, and the story goes a fair way beyond that of standard police procedural, engaging with the backgrounds of key characters and with the challenges of inner city…
A tense page-turner A really refreshing take on the police procedural which explores multicultural East London with a deft touch. DI Rahman’s character is refreshingly well-drawn and although there’s lots going on in her family life it doesn’t get in the way of her investigative powers. Newham evokes the setting brilliantly and captures community life and tensions with ease. Looking forward to her next book!
Too basic and formulaic, despite the multicultural aspect. I was disappointed in the book. I usually like multi cultural stories but this book felt forced and the characters slightly wooden. There was no depth to the descriptions if the community and it was tailored to beginners abiut the subject. The plot was slow and not very inventive.
